Gum Inflammation During Pregnancy

 In News

Pregnancy is a life-changing event among women that causes dramatic health changes in all parts of their body – including their mouth! If you are pregnant, your oral health is affected. Oral changes like swollen gums, soreness, and even bleeding gums can happen during this time.

Nearly half of pregnant women experience sore, swollen and bleeding gums especially when brushing and flossing. This dental problem during pregnancy is called gum inflammation or also known as pregnancy gingivitis; a mild form of gum disease caused by hormonal changes. During the hormonal changes in pregnancy, plaque buildup is typical, and gums are more sensitive to the bacteria in plaque, which can cause gingivitis.

Inflammation occurs around the second semester of your pregnancy period. During this time, you will likely see a pinkish toothbrush and sink due to gum bleeding. To prevent further complications of gum inflammation, make sure to use soft bristle toothbrush. Also, brush your teeth gently at least twice a day, floss daily, and clean your tongue after brushing your teeth.

Furthermore, eat a diet rich in Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, and Calcium, which can help strengthen your teeth and gums. Avoid sugary food and drinks, and have plenty of water a day.
